Healthy breakfast cereal with berries

Happy Labor Day to my American family and friends! Halfway between Independence Day and Thanksgiving, this is a day off to tribute working men and women. It’s also the end of summer and for many the last time to fire up that grill. Well, no BBQ recipe here for you today, but I do have some purty colors in this homemade breakfast to remind us of the American flag:

Healthy berries

I usually kick off my day with a green smoothie or this breakfast ‘cereal’. No store-bought sugary stuff in our house anymore. But for someone who used to be hooked on those sugary cereals, I had to absolutely find a breakfast substitute. So now it’s almond milk poured over fresh (or frozen) berries, almonds, pumpkin, hemp, sunflower or chia seeds – or whatever nuts ‘n seeds I have in the pantry – plus freshly ground flax seeds – obviously all of them unsalted, unroasted, free of all sugary coatings and whatnot.

You can substitute the almond milk with any other non-dairy milk of your choice. Look out though when buying these milks, some of them are loaded with added sugar! I’ve found one brand in my local organic store which has absolutely no sugar added. I know it sounds sad, but believe me, when I add the berries they sweeten the milk – and this is coming from someone who has an incurable sweet tooth!

As for the flex seeds, remember, you need to buy whole seeds and grind them yourself to fully benefit from its goodness, and preferably just before consumption because they go rancid so quickly. I use a small coffee grinder that I have on my kitchen counter, it really takes a minute to have it freshly grinded so that I can fully enjoy the nutritional benefits of these tiny treasures.

  • a large handful of berries
  • almond milk or any other non-dairy milk of your choice
  • blanched almonds
  • pumpkin seeds
  • flex seeds
  • a dash of Indian summer
  1. Clean berries under running water (or defrost them in advance if using frozen ones)
  2. Place the berries in a cereal bowl, pour over the milk and add the nuts and seeds
  3. Grind the flex seeds and sprinkle over your cereal
  4. Give it a good turn to mix ingredients and enjoy!
