Bloody tonic

You agree with me that – in the northern hemisphere at least – January is the worst month of the year? You’re broke after Christmas, no pennies left for the post-holiday sales, and anyway, you wouldn’t be in the mood for shopping as you feel fat and paler than a zombie. Vitamin D depletion is at an all-year high while moods are at an all-year low. Kids, colleagues and everyone on your commute are coughing ’n sneezing, no wonder you’re red-eyed with a runny nose! It’s such a struggle getting through the month! But hallelujah, now that we made it through and entered the much more cheerful month of February, we deserve a cocktail, wouldn’t you say?

Bloody Tonic

I planned to make this cocktail one evening when we had friends over for dinner. A really simple one made up of 3 ingredients: vodka, tonic and cranberry juice. What happened, though, is that I accidently bought pomegranate juice instead of cranberry, served it to our friends who gave a high note to the drink I thus concocted through an oversight. I only noticed the following day that I, in fact, made a mistake. Interested in trying out the original recipe, I bought cranberry juice for the next occasion. Lo and behold, it turned out that my incorrect version tasted much better! I found the cranberry juice way too sweet, while the tart pomegranate gave a unique, less lollipopy taste to the cocktail. Although from photography perspective the cranberry juice gives a much prettier, eye-catching color (the difference is quite pronounced in the photo below), I’ll make this drink with pomegranate at future occasions. You could of course experiment with other fruit juices: I could easily imagine this drink with a dash of blackcurrant liquor or why not go bold with a sour cherry juice? But definitely try my version and let me what you think!
