WATERFRONT FOOD MARKET – A PHOTO REPORT

We spent a few hours on Sunday at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. It was gorgeous sunny weather and luckily the place was not crowded (I always have to remind myself that it’s low season here but I suppose in peak summertime the place must be jam packed with tourists). There’s a food market where I was hoping to find fresh produce but besides a tiny fruit and veggie shop in one corner, it’s all food stands offering a wide range of products for foodies. Below is a photo report:

You’ll find a large smoothie stand in the center of the market but even better, you can go dairy-free with freshly squeezed green juices.

To our great surprise there was a stand selling ‘Hungarian flatbread.’ That would be ‘lángos’ in Hungarian.  You’d never find lángos in Hungary with sundried tomatos, feta or much less with smoked salmon as it’d be mostly topped with grated cheese or sour creme or more commonly with no toppings at all, simply rubbed with garlic or garlic butter. But I’m all for innovation, so why not! My daughter who is not so much of an avant-garde eater yet, asked for a plain lángos which we all tasted before deciding not to try anyof the flatbreads on offer. To put it politely, the taste and texture was a disappointment, very far from the fluffy, golden brown dough of deep fried lángos. That’ll have to wait until next time we’re back in Hungary.

To satisfy your sweet tooth you can find a honey stand with really good South African honey and there’re loads on offer for chocolate lovers.

We unanimously decided to skip the crocodile carpaccio but we did get a taste of the biltong. You’ll find biltong everywhere in South Africa: it’s a dried, cured meat made from beef and game meats, cut into thin strips. At first I mistook it for beef jerky (normal, I have never had beef jerky in my entire life) but as we learned from the shopkeeper, the spices, taste and manufacturing processes are quite different of the biltong.

After the slight disappointment of the langos, we opted to eat out in the sun at the Harbour House restaurant. I had the most wonderful salad of roasted butternut squash and beet with lots of leafy greens, a slice of feta topped with pesto, all accompanied by thin butternut chips. My husband went for a sushi platter and our daughter, in lack of any child menu, had some gnocchi: a gorgeously presented dish with butternut chips, fresh herbs and parmesan shave, but all too fancy for a child who, remember, is not very much into innovative cuisine.
